about

Sanskrit - Composer unknown
Arranged by Chris Hale and Miranda Stone

Recorded live on June 24th, 2016 at
Church of the Resurrection, Toronto

We first learned this song in 2004 when we stopped for a brief visit at Sewa Ashram, on the outskirts of Delhi. Ton Snellaert, affectionately called “Ton Baba,” started the ashram in 1997 when he literally began picking up the destitute from off the streets in Delhi, providing medical care and a compassionate heart. The following year, we were able to experience a week at the ashram and took part in the daily devotional singing that was sometimes led by Ton Baba or “Ompy” Umesh Kumar, one of the volunteers there. Being a place of rehabilitation and hospice, the music would often reflect the deep suffering experienced by those who were there as patients, or the struggle of those who were trying to give loving care in the face of such great need. Sometimes, those gathered there would sing and drum with full abandon, and I would be deeply moved to laughter or joyful tears by the wildness, as if hearing a battle cry of love and resistance in the face of despair. - M.S.
