about

Bengali - Lyrics by Rabindranath Tagore (1861 - 1941)
Music attributed to a Mysore bhajan presented to Tagore by Sarala Devi Chaudhurani

Recorded live on March 13th, 2020 at St Aidan's in the Beach, Toronto

Sarala Devi, a niece of Rabindranath Tagore, had spent some time in Mysore, returning to Calcutta with a collection of tunes, one of which was a bhajan from that area. Tagore took this melody and re-fitted it with new lyrics, creating Anondoloke Mongolaloke in time for the Maaghotsava celebration of 1893. A fascinating account of Tagore and his household can be found in Women of the Tagore Household by Chitra Deb, translated by Smita Chowdhry and Sona Roy.

lyrics

In this version of the song, we are only singing the first two verses, but have included all the verses below.

English translation by Anjan Ganguly with some edits
(another English translation is featured further below)

আনন্দলোকে মঙ্গলালোকে বিরাজ সত্যসুন্দর ॥
Anondoloke mongolaloke birajo, shotto-shundauro
Blissful world, auspicious light, you are present always, truthfully beautiful

1. মহিমা তব উদ্ভাসিত মহাগগনমাঝে
Mohima taubo ud-bhaashito mauha gogono maajhe
Your majestic appearance gorgeously fills the great skies

বিশ্বজগত মণিভূষণ বেষ্টিত চরণে ॥
Bishho jaugoto moni bhushauno beshtito chorone
the entire mortal world coiled around your adorned feet

2. গ্রহতারক চন্দ্রতপন ব্যাকুল দ্রুত বেগে
Grohotaarauko chaundro taupono baykulo druto bege
The planets, stars, and the moon in anxious longing, hasten

করিছে পান, করিছে স্নান, অক্ষয় কিরণে ॥
Korichhe paano korichhe snaano akkauyo kiraune
to drink and bathe in your everlasting beam

3. ধরণী'পরে ঝরে নির্ঝর, মোহন মধু শোভা
Dhauroni-pauro jhaure nirjhaura mohauno modhu shobhaa
Springs dance down the earth, what a beauty

ফুলপল্লব-গীতবন্ধ-সুন্দর-বরনে ॥
Phulo-paullaubo gito gaundho shundauro baurone
Flowers, leaves, melodious sound add to colours

4. বহে জীবন রজনীদিন চিরনূতনধারা
Bauhe jibauno raujoni dino cheero nutauno dhaara
Every new stream of life continues to flow day and night

করুণা তব অবিশ্রাম জনমে মরণে ॥
Koruna taubo aubishramo jaunome maurone
Your compassion unceasing in life and in death

5. স্নেহ প্রেম দয়া ভক্তি কোমল করে প্রাণ
Sneho premo dauya bhokti komaulo kaure praano
Love, affection, kindness, devotion, softens the heart

কত সান্ত্বন করো বর্ষণ সন্তাপহরণে ॥
kauto shaantauno kauro baurshauno shauntaapo haurone
your raining consolation cools down

6. জগতে তব কী মহোৎসব, বন্দন করে বিশ্ব
Jaugote taubo ki mauhot shaubo baundauno kaure bishho
What a grand celebration all around, the whole world adores you

শ্রীসম্পদ ভূমাস্পদ নির্ভয়শরণে ॥
sreeshaumpaudo bhumaashpaudo nirbhauyo shaurone
Wondrous beauty! O Almighty! Fearless Sanctuary!

In our attempt to get closer to the pronunciation of Bengali, words like Shotoshundoro, tobo, grohotaroko, and Chondrotopono are being spelled here as “Shotto-shundauro, taubo, grohotaarauko, and Chaundro-taupono, replacing the single “o” spelling with “au.”

Another English translation with we found very lovely has been done by Anjali A. Sarkar:

In the world of happiness, in the world of blessedness, dwell truth and beauty.

Your glory overflows the great skies,
The world, like an ornamental jewel gathers at Your feet.

Planets, stars, moons, and sun at an impatient fast pace
drink and bathe in undying rays.

Upon the earth, pour waterfalls, enchanting splendour,
flowers-leaves-songs-smells, in beautiful multi-graded shades.

Life flows night and day in ever new currents.
Your empathy unceasing in birth and death.

Affection love generosity devotion - tempers the soul,
How many consolations You pour on us to eradicate our worries.

What grand celebration is this, in Your world. The world worships
these divine resources, this earthly abode, this fearless shelter
